| JCPS Bus Driver/Artist Creates Portrait for Stopher Elementary When he is not driving a school bus for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) , Carlos Raphael Fish often creates artworks in oil-based paint, graphite, chalk, or pencil. He has won awards at regional art shows, and his works are featured at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Soon, one of his works will be featured at Joseph E. Stopher Elementary School (14417 Aiken Road). On Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007, Fish’s portrait of Joseph E. Stopher will be unveiled at the official dedication ceremony for the school. His portraits already hang in many Louisville homes. He says that during the past 30 years, he has sold more than 3,000 works--many to JCPS teachers, other bus drivers, custodians, counselors, and principals. "I have several of his paintings in my private collection," says Dr. Brigitte Owens, principal at Stopher Elementary. "Carlos is a very talented and visionary artist. He has a gift of capturing every detail of his subject’s facial features and expressions." "I am able to create faces as easily as putting my shoes on in the morning," says Fish, who taught himself painting and portraiture by studying art textbooks. Many of his works can be viewed on the Web at Artistcrfish.com. For more information, contact Lauren E. Roberts, JCPS public information officer, at 485-3357. |
